History of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania
Founded in 1795 by German immigrant Jacob Ake, Williamsburg was originally known as Aketown. Ake chose this location for its proximity to the Juniata River and the abundant “Big Spring,” which supplies the area with five million gallons of water daily. In 1810, the town was renamed Williamsburg in honor of Ake’s son, William. By 1827, it was incorporated as a borough, thriving with industries such as grist and saw mills, a leather tannery, an iron furnace, and a wool mill. The arrival of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal in the 1830s further spurred economic growth, positioning Williamsburg as a vital hub in the region.
