History of Saxton, Pennsylvania
Founded in 1854, Saxton emerged as a pivotal town on the western edge of Pennsylvania’s coal-rich Broad Top region. The town’s inception was closely tied to the Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain Railroad (H&BT), established to transport coal from the surrounding mines. James Saxton and Jacob Fockler, recognizing the potential of this transportation hub, purchased land from Henry and David Shoup to lay out the town. The railroad’s arrival spurred rapid growth, leading to Saxton’s incorporation as a borough on February 14, 1866. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Saxton thrived with various industries, including iron furnaces, brickworks, and a 7 Up bottling plant. In the 1960s, the Saxton Nuclear Generating Station was established, serving as a research facility until its decommissioning in 1972. Today, Saxton stands as a testament to its rich industrial heritage and close-knit community spirit. Learn more about Saxton’s history on the town’s Facebook page or Wikipedia.
