Pond Repair
in Bedford, PA

Bedford’s history stretches to Pennsylvania’s colonial frontier. European traders were active in the surrounding region by the late 1740s and early 1750s, but permanent settlement followed construction of the Forbes Road in 1758. That same year, British forces under General John Forbes established Fort Bedford as a fortified supply point during the campaign against French-held Fort Duquesne. The fort was named for John Russell, the fourth Duke of Bedford, and the community that developed nearby took the same name. John Lukens laid out the village in 1766.

Bedford was formally incorporated as a borough in 1795. The community entered national history during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, when President George Washington traveled to Bedford while federal troops assembled to suppress resistance to the federal whiskey tax. Washington used the Espy House as his headquarters during his stay. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bedford benefited from its position on important east-west transportation routes, including the route that became the Lincoln Highway. Tourism also became significant after Dr. John Anderson began developing the nearby mineral springs in 1796; Bedford Springs eventually attracted prominent visitors and presidents. Today, Bedford is the county seat of Bedford County and is recognized for its historic district, preserved architecture, museums, and mountain setting.
