Backyard Transformation with Patio, Firepit, and Custom Water Feature

This backyard project was exciting from the very first consultation to the final walkthrough! Our lead designer, Derek, worked closely with the homeowners who were building a custom pool at the same time. The goal was to create a seamless landscape design that tied the pool, patio, fire pit, and outdoor living areas together—while showcasing a stunning water feature as the centerpiece.

The homeowners wanted the large water feature to be visible from every angle—the pool, the patio, the fire pit, and the house. Our team designed a multi-tiered waterfall with natural pooling areas and a unique negative edge that flows right onto the patio. This creates not only a dramatic focal point but also the soothing sound of running water throughout the backyard.

Because the property sits on a steep mountain grade, we incorporated expert regrading and boulder placement to stabilize the yard and blend the new design into the natural landscape. Large sandstone boulders frame the custom fire pit, which is lined with a steel ring for safety and long-lasting use. Black Hills stone steps connect the multi-level patio spaces, bordered by boulders that act as both functional retaining walls and artistic accents.

The expansive flagstone patio provides plenty of room for entertaining family and friends. To soften the hardscape, we planted creeping thyme in the joints, which will fill in over time and add color, fragrance, and texture underfoot. The combination of natural stone, plantings, and water movement makes this outdoor living space feel like a private mountain retreat.

This landscape and hardscape installation brought together everything the homeowners envisioned: a unique water feature, natural stone patio, lush landscaping, and a one-of-a-kind fire pit. By blending natural materials with functional outdoor living spaces, we created a backyard that is both beautiful and practical—perfect for relaxing or entertaining year-round.
