An Exquisite Outdoor Living Space That Has It All

This project is a company favorite – and for good reason! It’s the personal home of our lead designer, Derek, and it beautifully showcases how thoughtful landscaping and hardscaping can transform a property into a true outdoor oasis.

Over the years, Derek has slowly added to his home’s outdoor living space, each project building on the last. When their above-ground pool finally gave out, he decided it was time to “go big” and complete the entire vision – and the results are nothing short of spectacular.

A Welcoming Entrance

As you approach the space, a stunning flagstone walkway lined with lush, oversized hosta sets the tone. The path leads to a spacious pavilion that serves as the heart of the backyard. This covered structure offers plenty of seating and a full outdoor kitchen – perfect for entertaining family and friends.

Just outside the home’s kitchen window, a custom water feature adds both beauty and tranquility. Designed with copper bowls and bubbling boulders, it’s a centerpiece the entire family can enjoy. Nearby, a retaining wall carefully planted with colorful succulents and accented with decorative pea gravel creates a breathtaking focal point in the warmer months.

Multi-Level Design for Maximum Enjoyment

From the pavilion, natural stone stairs guide you up to a sunken hot tub, which was designed with discreet panel access for convenience. The main patio level features additional seating areas framed by Rosetta Stone retaining walls and thoughtfully selected plantings that add texture and seasonal color.

A Backyard Made for Fun and Relaxation

The swimming pool area was designed with teenagers and adults alike in mind. A spacious paver patio surrounds the pool, offering plenty of room for sunbathing, gathering, or simply relaxing by the water. A tanning ledge overlooks the pool and spillway fountains – the perfect spot for catching some sun while keeping an eye on the action.

For those cooler evenings, a set of dramatic Black Hills stone steps leads from the pavilion down to a large fire pit and seating area. Guests can choose to cozy up by the fire pit or enjoy the gas fireplace under the pavilion, making this outdoor living space functional year-round.

Water Features

One of the showstopping elements of this outdoor living space is the large water feature crafted from massive mountain boulders. Multiple cascading waterfalls flow gracefully over the stones, creating a soothing, natural soundtrack that can be enjoyed from nearly every area of the backyard. This custom water feature not only adds beauty and movement to the landscape, but it also helps define the space, making the entire property feel like a private retreat in the mountains.

Outdoor Lighting

As the sun sets, outdoor lighting transforms the backyard into an entirely new experience. Soft, strategically placed landscape lights highlight the walkways, water features, and architectural elements, while subtle up lighting brings out the beauty of the trees and plantings. The glow around the pavilion, fire pit, and pool area creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, allowing the family to enjoy their outdoor living space long into the evening.
